A small group of U.S. House and Senate Democrats introduced legislation Thursday to expand the Supreme Court from nine judges to thirteen.

4th District Republican Dan Newhouse said he is totally opposed to the idea, and described the legislation as an effort by the majority party and administration to alter the makeup of the court.

"This was tried before." explained Newhouse, "Most of us don't remember this personally but history tells us that even Franklin Delano Roosevelt, when he proposed this in 1937, was soundly rejected by Congress and I think this proposal will suffer the same fate, as it should."

The legislation is in part a response by Democrats over Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's decision to put the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to a vote a week before the 2020 election, despite refusing President Barack Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland almost eight months before the 2016 election on the grounds that the nomination was too close to the upcoming election.
