The Port of Mattawa was awarded $62,000 in grant funding to put toward updating the public water system and finalize the construction of Grant County Fire District No. 8's headquarters.

The Port of Mattawa has owned and operated the public water system that supplies fire flow, drinking water and commercial water services for 200 acres since 2013.

"We've grown a lot so as water systems we went from Group B to Group A which requires more testing, more plans," said Lars Leland, executive director. "It's all about growth, we're growing and we're moving to the next step."

Part of the grant will cover filtration and a new water system plan. The Department of Health will be in conjunction with the port on the water system. The project will also identify expansion plans such as water tower and booster bumps.
