The city of Quincy is supporting the city of Rock Island and Rock Island Mayor Randy Agnew's effort to widen State Route 28 from East Wenatchee through Quincy to I-90. Mayor Agnew is collecting support from neighboring municipalities to pen a letter of support for an application to send to Senator Patty Murray for federal funding.

"There's just a lot of traffic on Highway 28 to and from Wenatchee, East Wenatchee to Quincy to the Basin for industrial purposes, employment purposes, for shopping," said Pat Haley, city administrator. "Industrial vehicles traveling in that area slow things down."

It's mainly a one lane highway with hills and corners with drivers attempting to pass slower vehicles and both cities have identified, with the volume of traffic on the road, a safety concern.

"If they bring the highway through town here that would be economic driver for traffic coming through town that might stop for gas, shop at one of our stores or dine at one of our restaurants. So it has an economic component as well as a safety component," said Haley.

Mayor Agnew is looking to recruit letters from Chelan, Douglas and Grant counties.
