The State Fire Marshall's Office is warning folks that using electronic cigarettes increases their chance of fire risk.

Deputy State Fire Marshal Robert Wittenberg said lithium-ion batteries can fail during charging or transportation resulting in fires, and in some cases, explosions.

"Keep the batteries at room temperature. We don't want to expose them to too much of an extreme temperature." explained Wittenberg, "As for any loose batteries, you want to keep them protected in a case."

Wittenburg also suggests following the manufacturer's recommendations for charging batteries as well as using the charger that came with the device. Removing the charger when the battery has been fully charged, and avoiding charging batteries overnight can also reduce the risk of fire.
