The Washington State Clean Cars 2030 bill, which bans the sale or purchase of new gas-powered vehicles starting in 2030, is now just a Governor Jay Inslee signature away from law.

The legislation was passed in both chambers last week as an amendment to a separate bill that mandates Washington prepare for a future reliant on electric and other zero-emissions vehicles. Clean Cars 2030 would only take effect if the state approves a tax on vehicles miles traveled.

If and when the legislation is signed into law, Washington would surpass similar plans by Massachusetts and California, which both aim for 2035, to be the first state to ban internal-combustion vehicle sales.
