Some students from Wenatchee High School with participate in what is being called a "Global Youth Climate Strike" Friday

Participants will meet at the high school bus area at 11:15 am and march to Orondo and then Chelan Streets to gather at City Hall. At noon there will be a rally and speakers, after which there will be a gathering at the Community Center to view a film, "Ice on Fire."

Principal Eric Anderson said this is not a district or school sanctioned event, so students will need to get parental permission to participate.

"The strike itself has not been anything in coordination with us." Anderson explained, "The organizers have not communicated with us. The student who is working with the organization has not been in contact with us. So to that standpoint, we have not been in contact or communication with what is happening on Friday."

Anderson said while he is in support of students being activists for what they believe in, those without parent permission will be subject to the same standards as any other day.

"Really from our perspective what ends up happening is if they're missing school we have them marked as an unexcused absence." added Anderson, "So we communicate home that a student missed whatever it is. (Maybe) they missed the entire second half of the day or they're just missing 3rd period. Whatever that is, we communicate home that the student was unexcused for those time periods and we go from there."

Students are encouraged to bring their own posters and water.
