The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest is open for people to cut down their own Christmas tree for just $5.

Public Affairs Officer Robin DeMario says it's important to be safe and be prepared.

"Know what weather conditions are, what roads are open, and what the avalanche forecast is. Also, bring the right equipment for current conditions. You'll need warm clothing, gloves, boots, a flashlight, a shovel, a first aid kit, matches, and don't forget the saw."

She says you should also have snacks and water and something hot to drink.

DeMario also stressed it's important to know the rules about cutting your tree.

"Trees must be cut close to the ground with stumps no higher than 6". No cutting is allowed within 200 feet of lakes, streams, campgrounds, picnic areas, and administrative buildings. Permits are required for cutting trees but they're a great deal at $5. They can be purchased online or from local vendors."

She also says campgrounds are closed and many amenities are not available. Find out more by contacting your local ranger station.
