The Soap Lake Police Department is looking for the community to provide feedback on possibly adding a K9 to their department.

Chief Ryan Cox says it would be a dual-purpose dog who is both available for narcotic detection and to be on patrol for tracking and apprehension.

"Currently our average wait time when we need the [Grant County] Sheriff's Office dog or Moses Lake dog to respond to our area for a track runs about 34-38 minutes that we're waiting. So we're taking the steps to basically add it to us because it's going to be super beneficial to our community."

The dog would be paid for by donations and grants. Soap Lake Police is looking for about $20,000 for donations and grants to help get the dog in-house.

Cox says they will present their findings of a Facebook poll with support from local businesses and residents and the next city council meeting March 4th.

"If it's approved next Wednesday our timetable is; I'm hoping to raise enough money to make it to the June class which would put my K9 team back on the ground mid-July to late-July."

You can provide feedback and vote in a poll on the Soap Lake Police Facebook page before Wednesday night.
